There are many organizations that call themselves “cooperatives.” However, many of them do not follow the principles of a "true cooperative." A true cooperative is wholly-owned by its stockholders, is democratically run, directs profits to its stockholders – not third parties and operates in a cooperative fashion under Subchapter T of the Internal Revenue Code.

The NCBA represents cooperatives across the United States including: credit unions; agricultural coops; retail food and housing coops; rural electric, telephone and communications coops; health care coops; and more.

Thanexus®, Inc is a funeral practice management cooperative created by the New Jersey State Funeral Directors Association, Inc. (NJSFDA) to assist independently-owned funeral homes with critical business management services including:

Thanexus® assumes a co-employment relationship with firms, provides assistance with managing employees and extends the administrative and operational support that enables owners and managers to focus more time and attention where it is needed most… providing exceptional service to families.

Of roughly 750 registered mortuaries in the state of New Jersey, 109 participate in the cooperative. Hundreds more access financial services through an affiliated agency, Thanexus Financial Services L.L.C.
