There are many organizations that call themselves “cooperatives.” However, many of them do not follow the principles of a "true cooperative." A true cooperative is wholly-owned by its stockholders, is democratically run, directs profits to its stockholders—not third parties—and operates in a cooperative fashion under Subchapter T of the Internal Revenue Code.
